Learning to See Space
Reflections from an Architecture Internship
Before my internship began, I thought I understood what architecture looked like in practice. I knew how to draw plans, develop sections, prepare drawings in AutoCAD, work with materials, and think through a design problem from the perspective of a student. What I did not understand was how different a drawing feels when it has to become a real place.
College had taught me to look at architecture through sheets, models, software, dimensions, and juries. The internship made me look at it through another measure: what happens when someone has to actually use the space.
At first, entering a professional studio felt slightly unfamiliar. The pace was different. Drawings were no longer made only for presentation or evaluation. A line on a plan had a consequence. A dimension affected construction. A material selection affected cost, appearance, maintenance, and the way a person would experience the finished space.
That shift was probably the most important part of the internship.
I started noticing things I had previously ignored. A wall was no longer simply a boundary drawn with two lines. It controlled movement, privacy, light, furniture placement, and sometimes even the mood of a room. A door was not merely an opening in a plan. Its position determined how a person entered, paused, turned, and understood the space beyond it.
This changed the way I looked at drawings.
In college, I often looked at a plan and tried to understand whether the design worked. During the internship, I began asking a different question: what will happen here when a person actually stands inside this room?
That question made scale feel different.
A drawing might look balanced on a screen, but standing in a space reveals proportions immediately. A passage that looks sufficiently wide on paper can feel tight when people move through it. A ceiling height that appears ordinary in a section can completely change the feeling of a room. Furniture begins to define space as much as walls do. Light exposes surfaces differently from how they appear in a material sample or a rendered image.
These observations made me realise how much architecture depends on the distance between drawing and experience.
Materials were another part of this shift. As students, we often discuss materials through their properties, textures, colours, applications, and construction details. In practice, those decisions become more complicated. The appearance of a material matters, but so do its availability, detailing, workmanship, maintenance, junctions, and relationship with other materials.
I began looking more carefully at how materials meet.
A stone floor meeting a wall. A skirting detail. The edge of a countertop. The transition between two different finishes. These moments might occupy only a few centimetres in a drawing, but they have a strong visual and physical presence once built.
It made me realise that architecture is often experienced through small decisions.
The internship also showed me the gap between architectural education and professional practice. College encourages experimentation, conceptual thinking, and presentation. Practice introduces another set of realities: deadlines, revisions, coordination, client requirements, site conditions, material limitations, and the need to communicate ideas clearly to people from different backgrounds.
A design does not exist in isolation.
It moves between architects, clients, consultants, contractors, vendors, and workers. Each person reads the drawing differently. The architect has to make the intention understandable enough for the project to move forward.
That was one of the less glamorous but more valuable lessons I took from the experience. Architecture is not only about having an idea. It is also about making that idea precise enough to survive the process of construction.
There were also moments when I realised how much I still had to learn.
Some drawings that seemed straightforward in college became more complicated when I encountered them in a professional setting. Some decisions took longer than I expected. Some details that I had previously considered minor demanded careful thought. There were revisions, corrections, and situations where the first solution was not the final one.
I found this useful because it removed some of the distance between the ideal architecture we often discuss in college and the imperfect process through which real architecture is produced.
Most importantly, the internship changed my understanding of space.
Before the internship, I thought of space mainly as something designed. After it, I started thinking of space as something experienced.
A room changes depending on who enters it, where they sit, how light enters, what they can see, how they move, and what they are doing there. The same physical space can feel open to one person and uncomfortable to another. Architecture therefore exists somewhere between geometry and human behaviour.
This made me more conscious of the spaces around me.
I started observing entrances, corridors, thresholds, waiting areas, furniture arrangements, natural light, views, and even the places where people naturally stop. I began noticing why people choose one seat over another or why certain corners of a space feel more comfortable.
These are small observations, but they changed the way I think about design.
The internship did not give me a complete understanding of professional architecture. Instead, it made me more aware of how much there is left to understand. I returned to college with a different relationship with my drawings and software. I started seeing them less as tools for producing sheets and more as ways of communicating something that eventually has to exist in physical space.
I also became more comfortable with the fact that architecture involves uncertainty. Designs change. Details evolve. Ideas are tested against practical conditions. Learning happens through correction as much as through getting something right the first time.
Looking back, the most valuable part of the internship was not a particular drawing, software skill, or project.
It was learning to look.
I entered the internship thinking about architecture largely as something I had to design. I came out thinking more about the people who would occupy what I design.
Now, when I look at a plan, I try to imagine the person walking through it. When I look at a material, I think about how it will feel, age, meet another surface, and be maintained. When I look at a section, I think about the body moving through the height and volume it describes.
The drawing is still important.
But I no longer see it as the architecture itself.
It is a way of imagining, communicating, testing, and eventually creating a space that someone else will experience.
That is probably the biggest change the internship brought to me as an architecture student. I did not simply learn more about professional practice. I started seeing architecture less as something drawn on paper and more as something lived in space.
